Overview
Main identification features Body oval, head small, pointed, upper and lower profiles convex (body depth 2.5, head length 3.3-3.4, both in standard length); mouth small, at front; 1 dorsal fin, no notch after spines X, 18, middle spines longer than soft rays; anal rays III, 20, with S shaped edge; tail forked, upper lobe of males prolonged into filament; lateral-line scales about 50.

Rose pink with pair of brown to blackish spots on back below rear half of dorsal fin.

Size: grows to 20 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs and open trawl grounds.

Depth: 10-230 m.

Northern California to central Baja California, plus an isolated population in the upper and central Gulf of California.
