Physical Description

Plat-- plats are known as a legal description of a piece of property. A plat for a specific piece of land can be obtained at the local county Courthouse in the county which the property is located. In the case of Alps Elementary School, the assessment of lease reads as follows,"[b]eginning at an iron pin on the easterly side of the Athens-Whitehall Paved Road, said iron pin being the northeast corner of the intersection of the Athen-Whitehall Paved Road in the extension of the Athens-Macon Highway right of the way;and running thence north 9 degrees west 578-1/2 feet along the easterly side of the Athens-Whitehall Paved Road to an iron pin;running thenced north 71 degrees east 276-1/2 feet to an iron pin; running thence north 12 degrees west 165 feet to an iron pin; running thence 71 degrees east 152 feet to an iron pin situated on the southwest side of an unpaved road; thence running 28 degrees east 375 feet along the southwest side of said unpaved road to a point at the intersection of said unpaved road with the old Athens-Whitehall Road; running thence south 17 degrees east 80 feet along the southwest side of the old Athens-Whitehall Road to an iron pin; continuing thence along the southwest side of the old Athens-Whitehall Road in an southeasterly direction 263 feet to a point on the northwest side of the right of way for the extension of the of the Athens-Macon Highway; running thence along the feet to the beginning point." A small scale map was also obtained from the county Courthouse and can be viewed. The map is an outlined description of the main roads that are near the school property, as well as a plotted section illustrating the property line. In addition, the plat map shows how close the adjacent school, Clark County Middle School is to Alps Elementary.

Quad Map--A quad map is a larger view that includes the area surrounding the property of interest. This map will include all streets and businesses around the property. It also includes a graphical discription of the terrain of the land within and around the Alps property. The quad map is actually much larger then what could be scanned onto this web-site, only the portion that included the property of interest for this survey was used. Quad Map was provided by the UGA Science Library.

Aerial Photographs of the area were obtained at the local county planning office. This map encompasses the entire county as viewed from the air.

Site Description

The site surveyed, Alps Elementary, is located at 200 Alps Road Athens, Georgia. The school is located in Athens-Clark County. The area is suburban with mostly businesses in its immediate surrounding rather then natural habitat. The property is sandwiched in between two heavily traveled roads, Alps Rd. and Baxter St., as well as a side road that is estimated to be traveled moderatly. Only the back of the school lacks a busy road, however this area is mostly parking lot. The front entrance of the property has been nicely landscaped with various flowering plants and there is a small garden between buildings that projects a "warm-fuzzy" to its visiters. Parking lots include those in the back as well as on the side of the building with a circular drive/parking in the front. The need for parking spaces has unfortunately limited the amount of natural vegetation on this property. In addition, there is a large playground with many pieces of equipment that encourage the trampling of grass and other natural habitat. The back parking lot of Alps Elementary is shared with another school property, Clark County School which is located directly behind the Alps buildings. Alps Elementary property appears to be a very rocky and sandy soil. The trees are limited with only six different type, one of which appears to have been planted. Herbs are mostly from the Grass Family.
