Discover Life in America

Athens-Clarke County Discover Life in America;
Biodiversity and Web Technology Program

CLASS PARTICIPATION

The students in Carol Hall's sixth grade class at Hilsman Middle School are participating in the Discover Life in America program. They are studying the trees in the park next to their school. They are learning to identify the different species of trees along the park trail and will develop web pages for these species as well as a key to the common trees. Their long term goal is to develop a pamphlet that can be used to identify the trees in the school yard and along the trail.

During this project the students have learned about scientific methods. They learned how to conduct a transect, and what scientific terms like 'relative abundance' and 'common species' mean. Each student researched a species of tree found along the trail and created a web page for that tree. As this project continues links will be added to new pages the students create.
