CATALPA BIODIVERSITY PROJECT

Lesson Plan 17: Comparing Moths and Butterflies

by Brenda Hunt
8th grade biology teacher
Habersham County

Purpose:
Students will compare and contrast the anatomy or moths and butterflies. Students will suggest reasons for these differences. Students will use pictures or other references to compare with their sketches.

Step One:
Place a number of references on butterflies and moths on a table for students to use. Ask students to compare their moth pictures with pictures in these books and decide how moths are different than butterflies. Make a list of the differences on the board.

Step Two:
Ask students to list why they think these differences exist. Have students do activity sheets to compare moths and butterflies. Suggested resources for these sheets are"Insects" by Pat and Barbara Ward and"Creepy Crawlies" from Teacher Created Materials, Inc. .
