OBJECTIVES:
Teach students how to:
1.set up a plot in a wooded area and begin recording tree distributions with the plot
2.identify trees looking at different external characteristics And determine the dominant tree
species within each plot
3.map tree species within plots and compare species distributions between other plots
MATERIALS:
__Tape measurer
__compass
__flagging tape or tree tags
__flags
__copy of field guide to identify trees
__copy of data table
__paper and pencil
__map of school
SAFETY: PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH ANY KIND
OF PLANT THAT YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT IT. POISON IVY MAY BE
PRESENT IN THIS AREA AND MANY PEOPLE ARE ALLERGIC TO IT. THE
TERRAIN IS NOT LEVEL, SO BE CAREFUL TO AVOID INJURIES.
PROCEDURE:
1.Measure a plot 20 meters by 10 meters. Use compass at corners to make sure there is a 90
angle.
2.
Put flags on the perimeter of your plot every 10 meters.
4. Identify the trees within your plot (use field identification)
5. Mark the different species of trees with flagging tape according to the following color code:
species color
oak pink
tulip poplar orange
pine yellow
sweet gum red
6. Refer to diagram below to see how your plot should look like.
