Dark Dozen
Please help us study moths.
Overview
Our goals are to better understand insects and help in their conservation.
We want you to photograph moths at your porch lights and share with us your findings.
Target species
Click on each image to learn more about our Dark Dozen.
Easy to learn and relatively common across North America,
these charismatic species can teach us much about how
urbanization, climate, and other factors impact insects.
What you should do
-
Switch on your porch light(s) at dusk.
-
Wait for at least an hour or until nearly dawn, if you are an earlybird.
-
Make sure your smart phone's geolocation is switched on.
-
Use its camera to photograph your porch light(s) and the wall behind, with or without any moths.
-
Individually photograph as many of the dark dozen species that you find.
If your don't find any, photograph the largest moth you find.
-
Tweet or Instagram all your photos to @mothmath. Include your state and county with one of them.
Even if you find no moths, send the photograph of your light(s) and empty wall.
