Focal moth species
Discover Life is focusing its Mothing project on the following species.
We will analyze how weather patterns and other environmental factors affect species seasonality and abundance
across a latitudinal gradient in eastern North America over the past century. We will use photography to collect contemporary
data at our intensive monitoring sites and at other sites using data submitted to websites
such as BAMONA, BugGuide, and Flickr.
We will gather historical data by digitizing museum specimens, photographing both specimens and their labels
(for example, see specimens we photographed at the University of Georgia Arthropod Collection)
and from online specimen databases such as GBIF.
After we compile the moth data at the county level, we analyze trends in response to temperature and precipitation using NOAA's weather station data.
We need help photographing moths at lights at night, photographing moths and their labels in collections, digitizing labels, identifying speciemens, and checking data for errors. If you would like to help in this effort, please contact Discover Life's Outreach Coordinator, Nancy Lowe.
