Red Hickory (Carya ovalis)

Plantae>Magnoliophyta>Magnoliopsida>Juglandales>Juglandaceae>Carya ovalis (Wangenh.) Sarg.

Red (or Sweet Pignut) Hickory is an occasional medium-large tree. Similar to Pignut Hickory (C. glabra) , but the leaves usually have 7 leaflets instead of 5, are pubescent beneath instead of glabrous, and have red petioles instead of green.

Petiole bases are red. Buds are similar to those of the closely related Sand Hickory (C. pallida) , but without golden-colored glands.
