Chaenomeles speciosa Nakai, Rosaceae Common name : Flowering quince, Japanese quince. Voucher : Kostadinov 005, 018, 090, (URV) Brief description : A thorny hardwooded shrub. Leaves are elliptic-ovate to somewhat obovate, simple, alternate, entire, pinnately veined, margins serrate-toothed.  The stipules are characteristically large. Flowers are perfect, white to red depending on the cultivar, developing before the foliage (mid- to late March). Fruits are a pome with a closed top.  Campus data : Cultivated occasionally on campus.

Seasonal Interest and Photographs Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nak.   Flowering Quince Flowers: White, pink, rose or red flowers in February or March. Foliage: Medium to dark green, medium to coarse texture, plant is larger than Chaenomeles japonica . Fruit: Greenish yellow apple-like fruits, not common, larger than Chaenomeles japonica .
