Order - MEGALOPTERA
(Greek, megas = large; pteron = wing)
Common Names: alderflies, dobsonflies, snakeflies
Distribution: Best represented in temperate regions

Description

North America's two families of Megaloptera (Corydalidae and Sialidae), both with aquatic larvae, used to be included in the order Neuroptera. Shown here are the lotic fishfly Nigronia (resting on an alder branch) and the alderfly genus Sialis ( laying eggs on a sedge stem ) .
