It is very difficult to track down much information about the old coal mines in certain areas of Tennessee. Best as I can tell, this mine is developed in a local coal seam in the Pennsylvanian age Signal Point Shale. The massive sandstone above it is the Sewanee Conglomerate. This was a fairly important mine because a road was developed to it. The coal seam is visible behind Brian and it is almost five feet thick.

In the publication, "Geology of Hamilton County, Tennessee, Bulletin 79, 1979" I found a reference to the Montlake Mine. There are mines 1 through 5 operated by the Montlake Coal Company, Signal Mountain Coal Company, and the Durham Coal and Iron Company. "The Montlake lease totaled 2,700 acres, 1,650 acres contained minable Sewanee Coal. About 250 acres were mined out up to 1926.

Above the Sewanee Conglomerate is the Whitwell Formation which contain several important coal seams including the Sewanee Seam. On top of the massive Sewanee Conglomerate, seen in this image, is a mile long linear surface mine with occasional drifts into the Sewanee Coal Seam. I think this is the mine referred to as the Montlake Mine. I am sure that the drift in the image I took has a name but I can't find much about it with my limited access to coal industry records for the area.
