The Piper Coal Mine is a strip type mine that left a long scar on the landscape. It was never reclaimed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to reclaim much if it. This pond may not be reclaimed because it is an important wildlife habitat. The beaver dam greatly enlarged the pond.
