| This is a spotted salamander larvae that died from a ranavirus infection. At this point I am not prepared to disclose the location. We found dozens of spotted salamander larvae in varying stages of development that were dead or dying. While I was photographing a dead specimen, this advanced larvae crawled out of the water and died before me. We collected several dead and dying specimens and sent them to the U.S.G.S National Wildlife Health Center. www.nwhc.usgs.gov/ The National Wildlife Health Center confirmed the spotted salamanders died from a ranavirus infection.
