The National Park Service describes these as emergent wetlands. They apparently didn't exist before the massive Tropical Storm Alberto floods of 1994. Hardwood floodplain swamps along the Ocmulgee River once occupied this environment. For more information: home.nps.gov/ocmu/naturescience/index.htm
