I can't find a geologic reference that says which sandstone unit this is. I suspect is like the rest of the "rocktowns" on Lookout and Pigeon Mountains which are developed in the Pennsylvanian age Sewanee Conglomerate. Small rounded quartz pebbles are frequent in the rock. I think this is the largest of the Lookout Mountain "rocktowns". It is a famous rock climbing and bouldering area. For more information: www.roamschool.com/Alabama/cherokee.html
