After the cotton plants are mature, a defoliant is sprayed on the plants to kill the leaves so they will drop off. Next a large machine called a cotton picker will systematically move through the field to process these cotton modules: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_picker

I actually saw that operation one time.
