I think this is a serious drought response. Looks like some of the trees just lost their leaves and others have perished. I guess it will be interesting to see who sprouts leaves next year. This mountain is composed of sandstone and shale near the top and the rest is limestone. It is obvious where the limestone begins. There is no water near the surface.
