Head, cheek or gena, pattern of light colored band running along the edge of the compound eye
Interrupted in the center, either completely or with only a small strip of yellow or white remaining along the edge of the eye, in other cases pale area only exists along the rear of the margin of the eye

Vespinae genal band, interrupted
At times this character can bleed into more of a notch-like situation or perhaps a dark patch in that area and yellow running on either side of it. However, the general pattern should show up in a series of specimens.
