Overview
Main identification features
  • eye = width between eyes
  • dorsal fin has 86-92 rays anal fin has 64-70 rays
  • spots with dark centers
Dorsal rays 86-92; anal rays 64-70; pectoral rays 10; body depth 1.5-1.8 in standard length; lateral-line scales 75- 80; lateral line strongly arched above pectoral fin; eye diameter about equal or less than width between eyes; snout profile with or without distinct notch.

Pale to dark brown; with numerous star shaped pale blotches (often blue), some with dark centers grouped in circles.

Size: reaches at least 20 cm.

Inhabits flat sandy bottoms.

Depth: 1-120 m.

Southern Baja and the lower 3/4 of the Gulf of California to Peru, and all the oceanic islands except Clipperton.

Diet: bony fishes; mobile benthic worms; mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs).

Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.

Feeding Group: Carnivore.
