Overview Main identification features FAMILY ACHIRIDAE

SOLES

Soles characteristically have the eyes on the right side of the body, rather than the left like the bothids, paralichthids and cynoglossids. Members of the family are characterized by a superficial groove along the edge of the preoperculum; the origin of the dorsal fin before the eye; usually rough scales; a straight unbranched lateral line; a tail fin that is never connected to the dorsal and anal fin, and has the right pelvic fin joined to the anal fin.

Like other flatfishes soles are bottom inhabitants of sandy or muddy areas.

This amphiamerican, tropical to subtropical family contains 8 genera with approximately 27 species. In our region there are eight endemic species from two genera.
