APOGON
CARDINALFISHES
Body oblong, compressed; head large, snout short; eye large; teeth small, no canines, usually present on center and sides of roof of mouth; preopercle smooth; 1st dorsal fin with VI-VII spines; lateral line complete; 23-45 pored lateral line scales, last few scales on tail fin; body scales rough; tail usually concave.
Apogon is a circumtropical genus with over ~150 species. Six species found in the tropical eastern Pacific are endemic to that region.
