Main identification features
  • bright silver
  • fins without spines
  • 2nd dorsal fin = skin flap
  • small mouth; pointed snout; large eye
  • pectoral low; pelvic under 1st dorsal fin ; scales smooth
  • tail fin forked
ARGENTINA

ARGENTINES

Elongate, a little compressed; large eyes; mouth small, at front; top jaw toothless; fins without spines; 1 dorsal fin plus a small adipose fin at rear, over anal; pectorals low on sides; pelvics on mid-belly; anal fin at rear; tail strongly forked; scales smooth.

A circumglobal genus except for central Pacific, with 10 species; with 2 endemic species in the eastern Pacific, both of which occur in our region.
