FAMILY CENTROPOMIDAE

SNOOKS

The family Centropomidae is composed of two subfamilies represented by the snooks (Centropomus) from the Americas and the barramundi (Lates) and its relatives from the Indo-west Pacific and African fresh waters. The two subfamilies contain four genera with about 23 species. The New World snooks of the genus Centropomus (12 species) are generally medium-sized, silvery perch-like fishes with a dark lateral line. Other characteristic features include two separate dorsal fins (the first containing VIII spines); III anal spines; a forked tail fin; mouth large and protractile; margin of preopercle serrate; and a lateral line that extends the end of the tail fin.

Snooks are very common in mangrove areas and exhibit a wide tolerance to salinity fluctuations. They readily enter rivers and may occur in pure fresh water. Snooks feed on a wide variety of invertebrates and fishes. They are fine angling fishes and are good eating. They also form an important portion of the commercial catch in the region.

The six (endemic) eastern Pacific species of Centropomus were reviewed by Rivas (1986).
