Main identification features
  • head depressed, wide, flat
  • mouth under snout, not extendible
  • teeth - 2 asymetric points
  • gill rakers short, compressed


Body deep and strongly compressed; head depressed, and broadly flattened above; top profile ~straight; eye small (<1/2 head length); mouth partly below snout, top jaw not extendible; jaw teeth with double, asymmetrical points; hairlike teeth inside throat; 15-19 gill rakers on lower limb of first gill arch, rakers are short, compressed and have the inner border of the lower half of the 1st raker serrated; 1st dorsal with ~VI spines, origin over or behind origin of anal fin; pectoral fins long (1.5X head length; 3 rows of scales below eye; very evident silver stripe along flank.

An eastern Pacific genus with two species; one of which occurs in our area.
