Description: A small tree scattered on moist soil of uplands and in open areas along streams. Young leaves and twigs are covered with dense white hair, hence the common name "Downy". Occasionally planted as an ornamental because of the large white flowers in the spring and crimson fruit in the fall.

Downy Hawthorn, Red Haw
Crataegus mollis

Rosaceae

Downy hawthorn has almost as wide a distribution in Texas as cockspur hawthorn, and is adaptable to different soils. The large leaves are thick with hair on the upper surface and densely fuzzy-white underneath. White flowers appear in March to April; the bright scarlet to crimson fruit ripens from August to October.
