Overview
Main identification features
  • brown + white spots and blotches
  • lower jaw curved - greater than gap between jaws
Dorsal and anal fins developed as skin-covered ridges, but clearly evident; rear nostril not tubular, at most with a raised rim; mouth large, lower jaw curved, so that a gap is present and teeth visible when mouth is closed; sharp, canine-like teeth of both jaws in 2-3 rows.

Dark brown, head and throat with numerous irregular white to yellowish blotches and spots; a series of large pale blotches on side of body.

Size: grows to 90 cm.

Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.

Depth: 5-25 m.

Known only from Japan and the Galapagos.

Character: HL 6.8-7.5, DGO 13.6-17.5, TR 3.2-3.5 in TL, Vert 148-152. Ground color dark brownish body with 3 rows of moss-like golden-yellowish spots on both sides of the body. Numerous little spots about the head, lower abdomen and the space between large moss-like spots. Pale yellowish abdomen. 
Distribution: Northwest Pacific: Taiwan and southern Japan. Southeast Pacific: Galapagos Islands. 
Utility: Fisheries.
