Overview
Main identification features Dorsal rays 9-10; anal rays 10-12; midlateral scales about 40-42; snout longer than eye and pointed; lower jaw protruding; pectoral fins reach front of dorsal fin (about 50% of standard length or shorter); pelvic fins small, not reaching anal fin origin; branch of lateral line to pectoral fin base.

Iridescent blue on back and upper sides, silvery below; pectoral "wings" greyish; dorsal fin largely blackish.

Size: grows to 25 cm.

Habitat: pelagic in surface waters.

Depth: 0-5 m?.

Endemic to the eastern Pacific, ranges from California to the Gulf of California to Peru and Clipperton and the Galapagos.
