Overview
Main identification features
  • body and dorsal fin very wrinkled
  • dorsal fin high
  • brown, wrinkles - dark
Skin of body very wrinkled, wrinkles extending onto dorsal fin; head large (16% of total length); snout a little deeper than wide in cross-section; head and trunk about Ż total length; dorsal fin high (maximum height = snout + eye), its origin well before gill opening; eye small, over center of mouth; front nostril a tube about 2/3 length of eye; posterior nostril at level of profile of head, just before front edge of eye; mouth large, straight, closes completely, lips with small papillae; teeth little compressed, with minute serrations a base of most of them, teeth in single series on jaws, none on roof of mouth; gill opening an oblique slit, about twice size of eye.

Light brown; body and fins plain, except for dark lines within wrinkles on body and dorsal fin.

Size: 98 cm.

Habitat: rocky reefs.

Depth: 1-225m.

Ecuador to northern Peru; Malpelo and the Galapagos.
