Flowering - May - October.

Habitat - Rich or damp woods, base of bluffs, streambanks, swampy ground.

Origin - Native to U.S.

Other info. - This striking species can be found throughout Missouri except in the extreme southeastern corner of the state. The plant is very easy to identify in the wild because of its zygomorphic yellow flowers and exploding fruits. When ripe, the fruits elastically dehisce at the slightest touch and throw their seeds a great distance. As the species is an annual, it grows well from seed and can easily be cultivated in a moist, shaded location.
The mucilage inside the stems of Impatiens is believed to help prevent the itch and irritation of poison ivy and stinging nettle.

Photographs taken in the Ozark Scenic Riverways, Shannon County, MO., 6-16-03.
