Body moderately slender; eye relatively small; snout relatively long and pointed; teeth smooth-edged, long and slender at front of jaws, blade-like and triangular at rear; a large first dorsal fin, origin over pectoral border; very small second dorsal and anal fins positioned near base of tail fin; pectoral fins relatively long and narrow, but less than head length; strong lateral keel on each side of tail base; tail fin crescent-shaped

Dark blue shading to nearly white on ventral parts; white under snout.

Attains nearly 400 cm; size at birth between 60-70 cm.

Habitat: oceanic, pelagic.

Depth: 0-740 m.

Circumglobal in tropical and temperate seas; California to the Gulf of California, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, Ecuador to Chile, the Galapagos and Revillagigedos.

Character: Body spindle-shaped and moderately long. Snout pointed and acutely conical. Large teeth without cusplets or serrations. Cusps of 1st upper anterior teeth with incomplete cutting edges. Tips of anterior teeth strongly reflexed, cusps narrower and more oblique. First dorsal fin large, Second dorsal and anal fins minute, and with pivoting bases. Pectoral fins moderately long and broad, its length shorter than head. Colour of underside of head is white. Distribution: Literature:  
Habitat: This is a common and extremely active shark species. Ovoviviparous, with a uterine cannibal. Litter size 4-25. Maximum size estimated to be about 4 m in TL. Size at birth estimated to be about 60-70 cm in TL. 
Distribution: Western Atlantic from Gulf of Marine to southern Brazil. Eastern Atlantic including Norway, British Isles and Mediterranean to Ivory Coast, Ghana, and South Africa. Indo-West Pacific including South Africa and Red Sea to Pakistan, India, Indonesia, the Ko 
Utility: Shortfin mako is an important species for longline fisheries where it occurs. Flesh is utilized fresh, frozen, smoked and dried salted for human consumption.
