PRIONURUS
SURGEONFISHES, SAWTAILS
Body oval, compressed; teeth moderately large, flattened, close set, with strongly tooth edges; VIII-IX dorsal fin spines; 3-6 pairs of bony plates with cutting keels along middle of tail base; pelvic I,5; anal with III spines.
A subtropical genus found in the east and west Pacific and the eastern Atlantic; with about 6 species; 2 are endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
