PRISTIS

SAWFISHES

Body shark-like but flattened; snout projects as a long flat blade with a row of large teeth along each side; gill slits on underside; spiracles behind eyes; two large, nearly equal dorsal fins; no anal fin; tail triangular, with little or no lower lobe.

This circumtropical genus occurs in all three oceans, except for the central Pacific, and contains possibly six species. One species known also from the Atlantic occurs in the tropical eastern Pacific. It is unclear whether another possibly pantropical species also occurs in the eastern Pacific.
