Overview
Main identification features
  • slender, compressed
  • mottled red/brown; pectoral: black tip
  • soft dorsal fin has 3-4 rays rows brown dots
  • 3 small spines under eye
  • body: no skin flaps
Dorsal rays XII,10; anal rays III,5; pectoral rays 21, the lower 14 unbranched and thickened; body relatively slender, depth 30-33% of standard length; snout relatively short, 7-11% of standard length; width between eyes 4% of standard length (5-6% in S. sonorae, a very similar species); pit behind eye weakly developed, only a slight depression; no pit below eye; ridge below eye bearing three small spines; cirrus above eye disappearing in adults; skin flaps absent on body.

Generally mottled red and brown; pectoral fins with blackish tip; 3-4 irregular rows of small spots on soft dorsal (rather than a rounded dark spot as in S. sonorae).

Reported to at least 13 cm.

Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms.

Depth: 7-160 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to northern Peru, Cocos and Malpelo.

Diet: bony fishes; mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs); octopus/squid/cuttlefish.

Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.

Feeding Group: Carnivore.
