IU Research and Teaching Preserve
Monroe County, Indiana
39.1905° -86.5017°

Overview

The IU Research and Teaching Preserve (RTP) consists of seven sites totaling nearly 1600 acres of natural areas located only minutes from the heart of IU's Bloomington campus--Bayles Road, Bradford Woods, Kent Farm, Griffy Woods, Lilly-Dickey Woods, MMSF AmeriFlux Tower, and Moores Creek. Bayles Road is approximately 33 acres in size and is mostly agricultural land and open fields, but there are also smaller areas of forest, wetlands, and aquatic habitats. The Bradford Woods preserve area offers a diverse landscape that includes eastern, western, southern, and northern facing slopes; a large perennial stream; and a contiguous block of forest with limited interior fragmentation. The 185-acre Griffy Woods consists of heavily forested ridges and ravines flowing into Lake Griffy but there are also flatter upland and bottomland areas. A diversity of successional stages, ranging from old fields to mature forest, are represented. Kent Farm is about 90 acres in size and consists of successional fields and more mature forest. The Morgan-Monroe State Forest (MMSF) Ameriflux Tower regularly collects data about CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and the forest, as well as many other variables necessary for understanding of carbon dynamics in deciduous forests. The Moores Creek site is a 261-acre tract of land consisting of heavily-forested and steeply-dissected ridge and ravine topography.
