Overview
The family Fagaceae includes beeches, oaks and chestnuts. These trees are important for timber production and their fruits provide a foodsource for wildlife and livestock (Brown 1990). A characteristic feature of the family is the cupule-enclosed nut; the fruit is enclosed by a scaly or spine-bearing cup (Zomlefeler 1994).
