Identification: "A shrub 5 to 20 feet high with several slender stems in a clump (Grimm)
Leaves: alternate, simple, elliptic to oblong, 1 to 2 inches long, to 1 1/4 inches wide,
founded cordate, finely and uniformly toothed, sometimes entire base, woody when young
ultimately becoming glabrous. Buds: imbricate, slender, conical, 1/4 to 3/8 inches long, greenish
to reddish purple, some pubescence often evident under edges of scale. Stem: Slender, brown
with grey onion-skin effect, glabrous (Dirr)"
