Hi, Pick:

Keith, Chuck, and I (with Janet Rock and Jon Harrod) had a very good
discussion on my draft design document. I intend to rewrite it, but I'll
wait to hear from others on the small committee first. Let me know if
you hear any comments I could use.

The general ideas for revision are:

Using catchments basins and stream segments to define landscape reference areas.
Noting the importance of extrapolating from specimens and observations to
mapping of potential distributions across the park (while retaining the
original dot map of actual observations).
Making sure there is freedom of choice and wander for taxonomists, while
retaining an ability to focus on certain areas if funding materializes,
for a more controlled set of observations.
Facilitating the translation of observation to map (including mapped
information like community type).
Adding to the User's Guide to the Smokies a way of keeping track of
ongoing field surveys in order to avoid impact to sites and to spread the
observation effort into poorly known areas.
Getting the TWGs involved in collecting guidelines (some will have
protocols, others will not).

Anyway, I need to get any additional comments before I revise.
