Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 13:28:47 -0500 Subject: DLIA Sorting and Processing Center Proposal From: "Jody Flemming" <jody@discoverlife.org> To: Becky Nichols <becky_nichols@nps.gov>, Chuck Parker <chuck_parker@nps.gov>, Keith Langdon <Keith_Langdon@nps.gov>, Peter White <pswhite@unc.edu>, pick@pick.uga.edu, Mary Williams <mjwillia@tricon.net>, Frank Harris <wfharris@utk.edu>, Tom Kiernan <tkiernan@npca.org>, Charles Maynard <grsm_friends_of_grsm_np@nps.gov>, phil_francis@nps.gov, Mike Sharkey <msharkey@byron.ca.uky.edu> Here is the funding proposal that Becky Nichols worked out for our Sorting and Processing center. Thanks to Frank Harris' loan of microscopes and the NHA money for bar-coding equipment, the funding request dropped from over 12K to 4K. Please look this over for discussion on Monday. The Sorting and Processing Center will be a place for visiting professionals to access laboratory facilities, such as microscopes and bar-coding eqiupment, after collecting in the Park. Additionally, personnel of the Center will be responsible for specimen tracking, data entry, bulk sample sorting, and distribution of specimens for further identification. Currently, the Sorting and Processing Center is furnished with tables, chairs, 6 binocular dissecting microscopes (on loan from UT), and an iMac computer, which has been furnished by DLIA. A bar-coding system soon will be purchased with funds from NHA ($3,600). The remaining needs of the Center for the first year include basic laboratory supplies (vials, ethyl alcohol, forceps, sorting trays, etc.), packing and mailing supplies, a thermal printer for permanent voucher labels, and a data processing program (Biota). The detailed budget is as follows: 1. Thermal printer 2,000.00 2. Packing supplies 175.00 3. Sorting equipment 290.00 4. Laboratory supplies 1,000.00 5. Miscellaneous supplies 335.00 6. Biota 200.00 TOTAL 4,000.00 Jody Flemming Discover Life in America (423) 430-4752 1314 Cherokee Orchard Road Gatlinburg, TN 37738
