Pick,

I see you have ignited the debate.  I think you are trying to be realistic
about how much it will cost us to keep the taxonomists focused on the
Smokies and not elsewhere, in your usual subtle manner.  I agree we should
have open debate about it. My only hope is that the media doesn't pick up
on the $250 million figure and attach it  to some mundane comment
contrasting the relative importance of knowing how many midges there are
in the Smokies to reducing school violence nationwide.  They probably
will.  At least we aren't kidding ourselves about the volunteer potential
of the majority of taxonomists anymore.  As Dan Janzen said at the
beginning:  No taxonomists, no ATBI.
