Monthly Report
December, 2000

Contacts and Communications
* Coordinated ATBI Annual Conference. Fine support of volunteers, Park
staff, and DLIA board. Excellent presentations and idea exchange. Thank
you!
* Participated in winter Board Meeting December 21, 2000. (See minutes.)
Spring meeting set for Friday, May 18 at 12:00pm at Park Headquarters.
* Revising ATBI brochure with assistance of Meryl Rose, NPS and Coralie
Bloom, NHA. Will likely have an updated one to the printer by the end of
January.
* Working with Ruthanne Mitchell on the Winter ATBI Quarterly. Please
send in articles or any info to her at cwmitchell@ntown.com
Science/ATBI
* Vertebrate study monies disbursed for all of mammal portion for year 1
($25, 000) and for part of reptile portion for year 1. Have requested
other participants to send me their reports of completed work. Waiting to
hear from them.
* Visited Gregory Cave with USGS's Jeff Corser and NPS's Carey Jones,
looking for salamanders, invertebrates, and bats. Took photos and sent to
Michael Harvey's grad student.
Housing
* With help of volunteer Jim Burbank, did "Deep Cleaning Day" for Cades
Cove house: December 4, including steam cleaning carpet. Smells good.
* Visited Cades Cove and Cosby houses and received scientists' housing
check in/check out forms. Cosby House needs plumbing work in kitchen and
master bath.
* Updated housing calendar. Sent "person/nights" to the Park.
Volunteers
* Developed proposed volunteer plan and presented ideas at Annual
Conference.
* Suggest Volunteer Training March 3 and/or March 10, using Volunteer
Coordinators as team leaders for various projects.
* Directed volunteer help with the ATBI annual conference-A/V assistance
for presenters, exhibits, entertainment, set-up, registration,
transportation, etc. Thanks!
Financial
* Received notice from IRS that non-profit tax exempt application has
been received. Hope to have the IRS letter in a couple of months.
* Wrote checks for phone, electric, office support, housing, ATBI
conference expenses.
Education
* Coordinated Glen Este High School visit to ATBI conference as well as
involvement from Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont.
* Contacted Karen Ballentine and Susan Sachs concerning their ATBI
education presentation at the conference.
Office/Clerical
* Updated spreadsheets for budget and Vertebrate Study funds allocation
* Updated DLIA mailing list.
* Met with Al Collazos and John Pickering about computer/web
site/database management, especially on concerns of methods of access to
records and currency of the data. Process in the works.
* Wrote "thank you" letters for ATBI conference help.
Publicity
* Met with Greg Stewart and received DLIA T-shirts to donate and sell at
the ATBI conference. He did a great job with them.
* Sent out press release on ATBI conference to about 40 media contacts.
* Discussed ATBI brochure update with NHA's Coralie Bloom.
Planning and Up-Coming Concerns
* Continuing to work on web site records access system with Al Collazos
and John Pickering.
* RFP's for 2001 research year.
* TWIG leader roles for 2001 research year.
* Volunteer coordination and planning meeting March 3 and/or March 10?
* Need for committees to meet and finalize plans.
* Develop 2001 and 2002 budgets (will meet with Frank and Charles Jan. 11).
* Planning for 2001 research season needs: housing, volunteers,
education, publicity, mini-grants, other funding of scientists and TWIG
coordinators, grants and scholarships.
