Gatlinburg, TN 37738 865-430-4752 Discover Life in America Monthly Report January, 2002 Jeanie Hilten and Emily Jones Highlights: … DLIA Board sets Strategic Planning meeting March 8-9, 2002 … ATBI/DLIA Annual Conference 2002 set for December 4-7, Glenstone Lodge … Daddy-Long-Legs volunteers assist ATBI scientist James Cokendolpher … Four volunteers help Emily and Jeanie "deep-clean" two ATBI houses … Bio-Quests and Fern Forays planned for Spring and Summer, 2002 (see calendar in ATBI quarterly) … Volunteer Orientations for 2002 scheduled for March 23-24 at Sugarlands Training Room and May 18-19 at Purchase Knob. … Photographers develop new slide presentation/video/power point show for ATBI … Emily Jones and Color Central create new Discover Life exhibit Contacts and Communications … Winter issue of the ATBI Quarterly will be mailed to over 2100 people and be posted on the web site. Science/ATBI … Participated in Twin Creeks meetings about NPS Science Center … Collected slime mold samples and visited Cades Cove ATBI plot … Mailed Opiliones samples to James Cokendolpher … 6 Bio-Quests are being planned for 2002: millipedes, protista, ferns, snails, lepidoptera, bats. … Plans underway for DLIA interns: one through Warren Wilson College, one through USGS funds for Sorting/ATBI pilot study. Housing … Thanks to volunteers Jim Lowe, Virginia Harrow, Bill Smith, and Ansley Haman for joining us for the cleaning day Jan. 26 at the Cades Cove and Cosby ATBI houses. … Met with Park staff about the Purchase Knob Learning Center; gave input on DLIA's role for scientist housing. … Developed updated housing info. packets for researchers. … Renewed lease for ATBI houses with GSMNP. Office/Clerical … Bills paid. … Office database updated. … Developed draft of job description for clerical help. Publicity … Contacted Wayt Gibbs of Scientific American about article on Lepidoptera Quest in June. … Southern Living (Feb.) has article on Discover Life in the Tennessee Living section. … Emily has had several other press releases in local papers. Financial and Development … Working with Millstone Accounting's Joyce Guerrera, David Scanlon, Emily Jones to bring final report of DLIA's 2001 profit/loss statement up-to-date. Joyce will prepare monthly balance sheet for DLIA staff. … Arranging for improved method of depositing $ into DLIA bank account from Friends. ************* January Development Report / DLIA Submitted by Emily Jones $ for Corporations Proposal submitted to Dollywood, ($10,000 for Lepidoptera Quest) and met with Ken Bell Feb 1 to discuss the project. (We will know funding level in early March) Proposal submitted to Leica Microsystems requesting in-kind product donation (teaching microscope, compound scope or dissecting scope) ($4,000 to $25,000 in product) Worked with George Ivey on Westgate Proposal ($10,000 for volunteer training) (Field visit scheduled for Feb. 7, 2002) Participated in a conference call with Fujifilm regarding potential projects such as photography workshops, web site development, data storage. Invited to submit a proposal in the $7,500 to 10,000 range. Pre conference consultation with Keith Langdon and followed up with consultation with Jeanie Hilten Kevin Fitz Patrick, Don McGowan, and John Pickering on most pressing needs for ATBI/ DLIA. Attended Tremont / Alcoa Celebration at Park Grill. Met members of the Alcoa Community Advisory Board and Alcoa Foundation staff . $ from Foundations Worked with Rich Harrington to submit a proposal to Lyndhurst Foundation on Baseline Aquatic Habitat Health Project for $30,000. Request was denied. This proposal will be resubmitted to Winslow Foundation based on Peter Raven' suggestion that we submit something to Winslow about conservation and in the $30,000 - $40,000 range. Marketing and Communications Met with Drs. Caudill, Lippmen and (Bonnie) Reichert to discuss the field placement and an internship for a Communications graduate student. Developed a new DLIA exhibit and premiered it a Wilderness Wildlife Week. Attended opening event. Distributed press release on grand daddy long legs and DLIA volunteer opportunities. Worked with Tonya Burk, Bob Miller and George Ivey on maintaining Friends WBIR Live at Five slot (Jan. shows on Elk Release and Tremont) Organizational development Organized and participated in 1st meeting of ad hoc Development and Marketing Committee. Assisted Jeanie and our wonderful volunteers in cleaning out Cades Cove and Cosby House. Worked with George on Blackbaud data base project to streamline Friend's special event work and generate Wildflower Week mailing list. Education Participated in two Air Fairs in Sevier County Schools. DLIA's message is on the Puzzle of Life, the interdependence of species and the importance of clean air. We have 15 Diversity of Life puzzles created as an activity to illustrate ATBI work with children. Prepared mailing list and invitations for the Taste of the Grill to benefit Parks as Classrooms. Recruited volunteers and am coordinating with Sue Bock on event details. Partnerships Met with Kurt Butefish and Bruce Ralston regarding the possibility of developing an arrangement with U.T. Geology Department to utilize UT students and Upward Bound students to enter data for mapping programs. Attended GSMNP Commission and gave report on DLIA and ATBI and Met Robert McCollum who may be able to help us obtain lab equipment and other in-kind donations for the Purchase and for the Bio Quests. Attended Wildflower Week meeting at NHA. Friends will promote event at the Dogwood House and Garden Show, do a fundraising auction for projects related to Wildflowers and native plants, and recruit volunteers to assist with registration. DLIA is presenting an all-day ATBI program Tuesday, April 23, *************** Planning and Up-Coming Concerns … Continue volunteer training and supervision. … Approval of student intern job descriptions. … Clean and organize Sorting Center for 2002 work and arrange for other space for sorting. … DLIA Board Strategic Planning Meeting March 8-9, 2002 … DLIA Mini-Grants program for 2002 underway. Deadline for submission Feb. 28, 2002. … Continue planning for fundraising for immediate and long term needs. … Organize Bio-quests for 2002. … Arrange more scientist housing and coordinate scientist "hosts".
