Forum on Science, Policy & Management of Fire in Eastern Forests
Our goal is to bring together all parties interested in the use and management of fire in eastern forests.
National and regional scientific experts, land managers, environmentalists, and other parties will participate.
At the beginning of the forum we will educate each other about our different perspectives and goals.
We should identify what we know, what we need to know, and
where we agree and disagree. We can then develop a joint action plan of
how to proceed toward developing a balanced, knowledge-based fire policy.
If planned and coordinated with the scientific community,
prescribed burns could be designed into experiments to collect critical
data that we lack to develop a sound, long-term fire policy. In short, we
need considerably more scientific data to manage our natural heritage
wisely, minimize the risk of wild-fires and tragedy, produce wood products,
and restore the health and beauty of our forests. Let's work together
to collect data, develop policy, and manage our forests to meet
all our collective needs.
