Suggestions for changes in Discover Life In America Mission Statement:
Our purpose is to develop a foundation of knowledge about all species
in the Great Smoky Mountains National park to better understand,
conserve, and manage
our natural heritage {delete unimpaired] today and for the future generations.
Mission statement:
To provide information technology and standards support (hardware, software,
telecommunications and content structure1) to the information
life cycle (input,
organization, management, dissemination2, and archiving)
of the data generated
or needed for the Discover Life in America/ATBI.
In discussing the mission statement it was recommended that the name
of the
group be modified to include the broader concept of "information
systems" since the
work is to manage the life cycle of the ATBI information. Thus
we recommend that
it become the "Information Systems Group".
1. Based on content and specifications from science content
groups.
2. In cooperation with the Web and Publications group.
Basic Concerns:
- Input from participants
- Standards
- Quality Control
Short Term Goals:
- Establish a data policy for collection in the Park as part of the ATBI.
- Establish an initial system that will allow data to be collected and managed
in a distributed manner, but which will provide for compatibility
as resources become available to build the integrated ATBI information
system.
- Develop the guidelines for exchange of data and publish these on the DLIA
Web site.
- Provide a suggested tool kit for those who need to set up local data management
systems (Biota is the current system of choice for input data).
Budget:
0 K
- Develop Guidelines and standards for data (Norm will take to Board)
- Inventory existing database resources on Great Smoky Mountains (Legacy)
(Kunze)
- Get guidelines on Web in great hopes of future money
- Define exchange format (Norm)
- Negotiate Biota deal (Bonnie/Mark)
1 K
- Buy a few copies of Biota to stimulate use ($400)
- Hold data input workshop ($600)
30 K
- Build a functional system (host first year data) (Norm)
Timeline:
PHASE I
1/15
- Define ATBI minimal data guidelines (Norm/Mark)
- Agreement with Biota (Bonnie/Mark)
2/1
3/1
- Define data exchange format (Norm)
6/1
- Data Inventory (Legacy) (Kunze)
- Meeting (Evaluation of data) (Norm)
9/1
- Fully functional system assuming 30K funding (Norm)
- NSF Grant issued
Begin PHASE II (Contingent of funding from NSF or otherwise)
Teams:
Work of the group will also require sub teams to address specific issues:
- System Development
- User Requirements
- Guidelines/Policy
- Data Quality/Content Team
