We are very fortunate to be able to "co-meet" with the Naturalists' meeting of Discover Life, as we did last year. Just like the first two GISIN standards workshops (GISIN1 and GISIN2), this one (which we are calling GISIN3) will be a small meeting to further discuss and finalize the four remaining GISIN data models (ManagementStatus, ImpactStatus, DispersalStatus, and Citations). It will be held in the same place with the same hosts as GISIN2. Again, this will be a technical meeting with a detailed discussion about the technical requirements of the GISIN protocol and refining the standard, so that reliable toolkits can be built to implement the GISIN system on a broad range of invasive species online databases. Because we have limited funds and very limited time before the meeting, please indicate your availability as "yes" or "no" as soon as possible; and also indicate whether your organization can pay for all or any part of your travel expenses. At the latest, please respond by 01 July. For this meeting, we request that you arrive in Elmira on Saturday, 25 July, and depart no earlier than Wednesday afternoon, 29 July, or preferably 30 July. If you require financial assistance to attend, please email me with your detailed requirements, e.g., tentative travel reservations and air ticket price. You should plan to arrive 25 July at Elmira-Corning Regional Airport in Elmira (ELM) or, to one of the other close airports: * Ithaca, NY: Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport (ITH) 30 miles north of Elmira * Binghamton, NY: Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) 60 miles east of Elmira * Rochester, NY: Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) 90 miles northwest of Elmira * Syracuse, NY: Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) 90 miles northeast of Elmira. A taxi from the Elmira airport to the college is a 10 mile ride. If you are arriving elsewhere, we suggest renting a car. A draft agenda for the meeting will be sent in the very near future. If you have specific issues you would like to include on the agenda, please let me know at asimpson@usgs.gov. Additional GISIN3 meeting logistics will be added to the Web page at http://www.discoverlife.org/pa/or/polistes/ev/2009pher/ in the near future. Please let me know if there needs to be changes made to your contact information on the bottom of that page. This GISIN3 workshop is made possible through funding and in-kind support from the U.S. Geological Survey?s National Biological Information Infrastructure, with additional logistical support by Elmira College and Discover Life. I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible or by 01 July at the latest, accepting or declining this invitation. In any case, thank you for creating invasive species information and making it freely available on the Web. Please feel free to email me with questions in regard to technical or logistical aspects of the GISIN3 workshop. You will note that a pdf of this message is attached, with the idea of helping you obtain organizational permission to attend. Should you require a personalized invitation, please ask me for one.
