Spring Natural History Survey

On 20-21 April, 2012, we invite you to join us and help collect data on species and their interactions. This 24-hour multi-site event will celebrate the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences opening their Nature Research Center's new wing. This spring survey is a stepping-stone towards building a permanent network of study sites to monitor target groups of organisms around the world.

Overview

We invite teachers, students and the general public to help scientists survey study sites throughout North Carolina and elsewhere around the world. Participants will use digital cameras and standard research protocols to collect high-quality data on ants, bees, moths, wildflowers and other groups. By also conducting a Fall Natural History Survey, our collective results will enable us to compare the diversity and seasonality of species across sites and better understand the impacts of climate, pollution, urbanization and invasive species on ecological communities.

Protocols and targeted groups

  • Moths -- Participants will photograph moths and other creatures that come to lights at night. They will upload their photographs, tag them with date and location, and then help identify species.
  • Photowalk -- This is a general photographic survey of a trail or other area. Participants will photograph plants, insects, lichens, mushrooms, vertebrates and other interesting finds. As with moths, they will upload, tag and help identify what they recorded.

Get involved

This event is open to everyone. If you would like to help organize study sites, refine research protocols, train participants, or collect data at a site, please contact us. We will post details here as they become available. Organizers include Discover Life, Encyclopedia of Life, Nature Research Center and other partners.
