DLIA 2001 Mini-Grant Executive Summary

EPT Species Richness and Community Structure in the Abrams Creek Drainage of GRSM

Investigator(s): R. E. DeWalt and B. Heinold, Illinois Natural History Survey

Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Plecoptera (stoneflies), and Trichoptera (caddisflies) (EPT) contain environmentally sensitive aquatic fauna, and are indicators of water quality. Our objective is to document EPT species richness and community structure in a pristine drainage in GRSM, namely Abrams Creek. These data will provide an example of high quality EPT communities in the region and serve as a comparison to impaired waters. Additionally, we will provide locations for disturbance sensitive species and suggest management practices to promote their continued survival. EPT specimens will be collected at two-week intervals using ultraviolet light traps May 20 through August 1, 2001 at 8-10 comparable locations.
