DLIA 2001 Mini-Grant Executive Summary

Survey of Selected Families of Brachycerous Diptera

Investigator(s): Joe B. Keiper & Benjamin A. Foote

The higher flies of aquatic habitats and moist woodlands represent a highly speciose component of the world's entomofauna that performs a wide diversity of ecological functions. We will use traps and sweep nets to obtain representatives of the fly families Anthomyzidae, Chloropidae, Ephydridae, Otitidae, Platystomatidae, Sciomyzidae, and Tephritidae. Floating pan traps will be placed within and at the margins of lakes, streams, and wetlands, while malaise traps will be placed at marginal areas of other habitats (e.g., between a wooded area and open field). We will sweep net specimens from herbaceous vegetation located in woodlands understory and standing water habitats.
