What did you like most about this course?

  • The teaching approach was fresh and helpful. I felt like a team with my classmates. I feel like I learned a lot about how to work with other people and to actually achieve things, rather than just talking about them.
  • I enjoyed this course very much! I would suggest everyone take it!
  • This course was the one of the best courses I've taken at UGA. It presented a new way to think about world-wide situations while also helping out villages in need. Pick is an amazing teacher and his love for the class really showed. I've already highly recommended this class to all of my friends! Great semester!
  • It was a fun class. I liked how it made you actually go out and do things as oppose to learning some material and regurgitate. In addition, I liked going outside and seeing plants and animals.
  • camping trip
  • Pick is an absolutely wonderful teacher. He's extremely interactive, and treats his students more like friends than anything. He just wants his students to share in his passions, and I think he's been extremely successful! The camping trip was grueling, yes, but an experience that you probably won't get anywhere else, and at any other college. I like the concept of a class project that's trying to save the world, and I really do hope that our resources in Malawi will be greatly appreciated. I think overall the best part of this course was not any one thing but the experience as a whole and the fact that I got to meet Pick! Definitely one of the most interesting teachers here at UGA, and a real pleasure to have spent a semester with. :)
  • Pick is a great teacher that makes topics interesting!!! Best class I've taken here at UGA!
  • The camping trip that we went on in order to establish unity throughout the class was one of the most engaging and exciting trips that I've been on throughout my time at UGA.
  • The hands on activities that were required. One of the only classes that I have had while at UGA that made class material relevant to current events outside of campus.
  • Dr. Pickering is the most considerate instructor I have encountered at UGA. He has a genuine concern for his students and uses more effective teaching methods than most other instructors. Instead of regurgitating information through a test, Dr. Pick teaches through experiences and discussion with the intent of his students retaining more information than cramming information then forgetting the next day. I learned a lot and was more involved with the class than I have been with any other course at the University. We love you, Dr. Pick!!! -your friend, Graves.
  • The camping trip was awesome and Pick pushed us to develop our own opinions about environmental issues.
  • I enjoyed learning how to work with a group. This class taught me how to create a goal and the steps I needed to do to accomplish it. The camping trip was not only extremely informative, but also a great bonding experience for the class. It was so much fun, and I feel it was one of the best parts of the class. Dr. Pickering is a wonderful motivator, teacher, and friend. I feel honored to have worked with him throughout the semester. This has been my favorite class in college!
  • Everything, great class! Different style than other classes, but I felt like I learned more.
  • Loved the camping trip and the hands-on learning. The most useful class I have take thus far at UGA.
  • The professor's emphasis on individual thought and action was a breath of fresh air in a system so often predicated on 300 people reciting the same facts the teacher and the textbooks threw at us.
  • The way Pick allowed us to see both sides of arguments, then make a decision that had been exposed to both sides of the argument.

How could this course be improved?

  • I felt the book report assignment was largely unhelpful. I think a debate or research project would be more useful.
  • The only suggestion I would recommend for this class would be to have the field trip earlier on in the semester. That way, classmates would make connections quicker and the final project could have more time to be worked on. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing.
  • We needed WAY more time for the class project! In my opinion, we should have been thinking about our project from the very first day of class, and starting it soon thereafter. (Maybe push some of the videos back?) I know things got kind of rushed at the end, so maybe just pacing the course better. Probably also best to get the albums started early as well, especially in the fall semester, since once winter comes around there isn't a whole lot to take pictures of. Oh, and having class outside (even just in the ecology courtyard) would be a fantastic idea!
  • By taking the trip earlier the class would become more established with one another and participation could be used more effectively to perform the goals set forth from the beginning of the year.
  • No improvements. UGA could really do itself a favor and start hiring a lot more profs. like John Pickering. One of the best teachers I have had while here at UGA. He was very engaged in the classroom and in his work. He really made the things we learned about intresting and relevant.
  • Get Dr. Pick a new heart so he can be with us for the whole semester.
  • The camping trip should have been earlier. I also think the syllabus could have been designed better to inform the students on their expectations for the class. Students were confused about their responsibilities for the class and how that would affect their grade. Overall, it was an amazing class!
  • Have the camping trip earlier in the semester.
  • Probably state the course objectives more clearly at the beginning of the course so the students know what will be happening. Probably also start the "large project" earlier so that the quality of the projects is better.
  • The photography portion was out-of-place. I highly doubt that anyone learned much of anything from it.
