RESEARCH PROGRAM

During the past thirty years, much of my research effort has been devoted to studies of myxomycetes and (to a lesser extent) other groups of mycetozoans (i.e., dictyostelids and protostelids) in terrestrial ecosystems. Primary emphasis of my work has been directed towards analyzing patterns of microhabitat occupation, species composition, species diversity, and taxonomic diversity of myxomycetes in the forests of eastern North America, but I've also carried out research in the Rocky Mountains of the western United States (the summers of 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983 and 1985), northwestern India (1987, 2000 and 2006), Alaska (1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1998), eastern Peru (1989), Ecuador (1998), East Africa (1990), New Zealand (1992, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007), Australia (1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006), Argentina (2005), Costa Rica (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2004), subantarctic Macquarie Island (1995), subantarctic Campbell Island and the cool temperate Auckland Islands (2000 and 2006), Ascension Island (2007), Bermuda (2007), eastern Russia (1995), Mexico (1999, 2000, and 2001), Cuba (2002), and Puerto Rico (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001). The ultimate objective of all of these studies is to generate the body of data necessary to produce a world monograph on the subject of myxomycete ecology that would compliment the works by Gray and Alexopoulos (1968) and Martin and Alexopoulos (1969) on the biology and taxonomy of these organisms. During the past twenty years, I have published as much on mycetozoans as anyone in the world, and over the same period of time I have been the PI or Co-PI on a number of grants (with total funding of more than $3,000,000) from the National Science Foundation. In addition, I have ongoing research projects (and numerous publications) in both forest community ecology and the taxonomy and biogeography of macrofungi.

SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITIES

  • Developed undergraduate courses in Plant Taxonomy, Tropical Studies, Global Ecology, and Terrestrial Ecology for the biology curriculum at Fairmont State College, graduate/under-graduate courses for the Division of Forestry at West Virginia University (Vegetation of West Virginia) and the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Arkansas (Mycetozoans, Forest Ecology, Terrestrial Ecosystems, and Myxomycetes).
  • Organized symposia at several different meetings, the most recent of which was a special symposium on Mycetozoan Biodiversity held as part of the Eighth International Mycological Congress on (which took place in Cairns, Australia, in August of 2006).
  • Developed, with the help of a former student (Denise Binion), a web site (www.myxoweb.com) that serves as a general introduction to the myxomycetes. Much of the information on the web site was derived from a book ("Myxomycetes: a handbook of slime molds" by Stephenson and Stempen) that represented, when it was published by Timber Press in 1994, the first true field guide to this group of organisms. The book has been translated into Spanish and ultimately will be made available in Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America.
