RESEARCH AREAS:
Interests are the systematics and biology of world sawflies (Hymenoptera: Symphyta), with emphasis on revisionary studies of the New World fauna. Service and identification responsibilities are on sawflies (Symphtya), ants (Formicidae), and the parasitic families Evaniidae, Gasteruptiidae, Aulacidae, Trigonalyidae, Stephanidae, and Megalyridae; over 32,000 identifications since 1970. Knowledge of the fauna of these groups is required. Responsible for curation of these groups in the National Collection (over 1,000 drawers). Current major projects are the Tenthredinidae of America south of the U.S., the final part of a treatment of neotropical Symphyta; a guide to the sawflies of the mid-Atlantic states, with emphasis on Virginia; impact of Dimilin application on non-target Symphyta at Fernow Experimental Forest, W. Va.; handbook of North American sawflies, adults and larvae their recognition, hosts, and biology.
